Playing bottom set for value
Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Tournament Blinds: $15/$30 9 players Converter Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is Button with 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6 folds, Hero raises to $90, SB calls, BB calls. Flop: 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ($270, 3 players) SB checks, BB bets $300, Hero calls, SB folds. Turn: Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ($870, 2 players) BB checks, Hero bets $200, BB calls. River: K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ($1270, 2 players) BB checks, Hero bets $480, BB folds. Uncalled bets: $480 returned to Hero. Results: Final pot: $1270 How should I have played this for maximum value? I realize the turn bet was weak and just flat calling the flop sets off suspicion to any reasonable player. Should I have just pushed the flop hoping he calls with t9-a9? Thanks. |

Re: Playing bottom set for value
Stack sizes?
W/o knowing stacksizes I say the best play is to raise BB's flop bet to around 800. If he calls, bet 1/2-3/4 pot on turn. As played, bet around 500 or so on the turn. |

Re: Playing bottom set for value
stack sizes are important here
raising the flop is ok, flat calling is fine. on the turn, get some value, youre missing out on a lot. bet 450 at least. |

Re: Playing bottom set for value
Nah they're nothing wrong with the flat call on the flop, and I don't think it sets off suspicions. I'd float a flop like this a lot, as well as call with small pairs that didn't make a set. Bet more on the turn, this line is great in that it gives away very little information about your hand and makes villains turn and river decisions extremely difficult.

Re: Playing bottom set for value
When you flop a set and someone bets in to you, you have a decision to make. Do I: 1) try to get all in by the river or 2) play cautiously to win a moderate pot. In this case, his PSB looks pretty strong, so maybe he'll call a flop raise, a turn bet and get ai on the river. If the stacks are not too deep, you should probably plan a raise + 2 more 1/2 PSBs to get all in by the river. If stacks are shallower, you might try to get ai on the turn in case he is on some kind of draw. (draws are pretty unlikely in this case)

Re: Playing bottom set for value
Definitely raising the flop here. He's leading for the pot on an extremely dry flop, and I don't see him shutting down to a raise. As mentioned though he's probably not going much further if paint hits the turn.

Re: Playing bottom set for value
Without reads (I don't know if you had any?) and on this dry a board, he could easily be making this move with two broadway or a small pocket pair. This is a flop where typically whoever takes a shot at the pot first wins if neither player is likely to hit it.
I like the call on the flop because this is a decent spot to float. If you never float with good hands, your opponents will figure out that you haven't made a hand yet when you do and bet accordingly. Calling the flop also gives him an opportunity to fire again into us on the turn and bluff off his chips. I would definitely bet more on th turn. You are giving him correct odds to draw to a straight/flush that he may have picked up on the turn, Half pot or a little more seems standard. Remember to post stack sizes too! |

Re: Playing bottom set for value
I'm sorry, I didn't notice that the converter didn't include stacks. He had about t1900 and I was around the starting stack of about t1500. I thought about it being him just making a play on a dry board but I don't think that's the case because a) he bet pot on the flop, where I think 150-200 would be sufficient and b) he calls a bet on the turn, although a small one. Thanks for the great responses.

Re: Playing bottom set for value
I don't mind the flop call. This overbet could very easily be a steal attempt and we don't want to chase him away.
Bet more on the turn. Shove river. |
