Live 3/6 Flopped Set. Who raises the river?
Live 3/6 hand. I've just sat down and folded a couple of orbits and this is my first hand. UTG villain is aggressive. Unlike most 3/6 players, he raises preflop with decent pocket pairs, big aces, and suited broadway cards, but doesn't seem to raise junk hands preflop. He occasionally will straddle, though. He seems observant enough to know that I am tight, but I am not sure if he has played enough with me to make that read. I am fairly certain that he will raise preflop from early position with AT and won't with A8. I am not sure how far he is willing to go with two pair or if he is capable of checking the flop with TPTK.
Preflop: Full table. UTG raises. MP1 calls. I call in MP3 with 99. BB calls. I'm a bit shocked it was only four-handed going to the flop. Flop: A98r suits irrelevent Checked to me, I bet, BB folds, UTG calls, MP1 folds. Turn: K bringing a two flush UTG checks. I bet. UTG check-raises. I three-bet. UTG caps. River: 2 not completing the flush UTG bets. I call. Given my read, is my call on the river the right play? |

Re: Live 3/6 Flopped Set. Who raises the river?
Call is ok, AK is lowest of his range, most likely AA or KK, this is where 3-betting can be useful preflop... can get a better tell on his range.

I like it the way you played it... a lot. And utg had AK?

Re: Live 3/6 Flopped Set. Who raises the river?
I think that UTG would just about always bet the flop with AK so his turn cap might mean KK which was afraid to bet the flop or AA which decided to SP on the flop. I would play it the same and hope he has a slow-played 88.

I think this is KK so often that I'm almost tempted to fold. But I wouldn't unless he flipped his cards over after the turn cap or something.

Would anyone just call the c/r btw? I am almost tempted too because it smells so much like AA or KK but I'd probably still 3-bet.

This is AK enough to call the river. What's the question? Oh. Don't raise the river.

Re: Live 3/6 Flopped Set. Who raises the river?
i raise the river because i think the Noted Poker Authority (NPA) said to do it in SSHE... see River Play
the logic is a loose aggressive bettor will have a wider range...while against a passive just call... and if it doesn't work, complain to NPA |

Re: Live 3/6 Flopped Set. Who raises the river?
For completeness, villain turned over 88 and thanked me for not raising because he would have three-bet the river.
Having thought about it a bit more, I think my opponent would have bet KK and AK on that flop, so if I had a long time to ponder it, I think that his range is probably AA/88 given the flop and turn action. I think 99/88 are the only hands I play preflop here and three-bet the turn against this action and this specific opponent. |
