7 handed mid-weekday; generally 3 to the flop, generally passive pre and post flop
Someone unmemorable limps in MP, 50ish yo Filipino gentleman who seems to have been playing fairly straightforward in 1 hour of play completes in the sb, and I check 62o in the bb Flop: 278 checks thru Turn: 6 sb bets; I raise, MP folds; sb calls River: 8 (no possible flushes) sb checks; I??? Would you check, bet/fold, bet/call, and why? |

check. after the check through the sb might have bet any pair, or unimproved high cards. his check here shows some weakness, but the chances he holds pocket nines, a pair of 7s, or a bigger 6 make the value bet here a bit thin. The most likely hand in my opinion that he would play like this is 98s or something similar. Even a 56 is chopping with you here though. Check.

Well, I can certainly see checking. It's the safest course. And I'd probably check, because we'd really hate getting c/r'd here.
But why would we bet? Because it's also possible he had something like 44 and was hanging in there on the turn to hit his gutter. He bet the turn and then slowed down on the river when the 8 pairs the board. If you have any kind of a read that he folds on the river for 1 bet then give it a whirl. In fact, betting to get that specific information might not be horrible if you're planning on staying at the table a while. |

So I realize that I am an idiot poster, and gave away my action in the subject line.
Anyway, I recognized that I was counterfeited and with the low board thought I'd bet. I bet and was raised, now what? |

yikes.. just as we feared. If he's playing ABC he probably hit trip 8s on the river and figured you'd bet since you raised last round. I'd call only if I felt strongly that I needed to be sure he wasn't making a play.

if you can't fold to a raise, don't bet the river.
