Default Top 10 video games (Edge Magazine)

BBC article about the rankings

Edge magazine and industry experts rated the top 100 games of all time. Here's their top 10:

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Super Mario 64
4. Half Life 2
5. Super Mario World
6. Zelda: A Link to the Past
7. Halo: Combat Evolved
8. Final Fantasy XII
9. Tetris
10. Super Metroid

RE4 was a great game, but I don't think it's the second greatest game of all time. And I'd take Half Life 1 over 2. I don't disagree with their number 1 though.

Anyway, if you're the type that likes arguing with lists created by media outlets (and I know you're out there) have at it...

All the games on the list are obviously great and many of them belong, however I count exaclty 0 NES games, which clearly indicates this list is seriously flawed (ie geared towards newer games)

No Super Mario Bros 3?
No original Zelda?
No Mike Tyson's Punchout?

I assume this is a console only list, which is fine, but if this list supposedly includes PC games and StarCraft isn't on the list, then it's like making a list of the greatest basketball players ever and not having Michael Jordan on it.

Some thoughts on the comments, and the forthcoming comments:

There is no reason to think that every console should be represented, even the NES. The NES should obviously be on an "important steps in the history of video gaming" list, but the games aren't necessarily better than every other game anyone else ever put out there.

Yes, it's bizarre that they used different criteria for each game on the list, and in some sense that makes it useless. Tetris is arguably "more important" and "more catchy" than anything else there, but it's at #9. At least it's on the list at all, however it doesn't stand up as far as the criteria that they must have used to include things like Half Life 2 on there. If innovation were a primary factor, then HL2 would be replaced by earlier games that did the same things, only worse.

super mario 3 is better than all other marios and its not close. i haven't even heard of anyone ever making any other claim until this thread.

also tetris is severely underrated.

the dark horse i would like to see on the list (but i know realistically wouldn't ever make it) is Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean machine. probably the ultimate game from the tetris family.

edit: also, ocarina of time #1?

edit2: what about Goldeneye? pretty sure that should make the list. probably in the 6-8 region. maybe touch higher though. Finally, Starcraft? is there even a RTS on the list? no game has had a lifecycle as long as starcraft, there are still PROFESSIONAL leagues 10 years after the game came out.

Replace Mario World with Mario 3, Mario 64 gone. Tetris higher up, RE4 gone and replace with Starcraft.

Replace Link to the Past with Original zelda?

Other thoughts?

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - LOL
2. Resident Evil 4 - Great game, 2 is a little high though
3. Super Mario 64 - wtf?
4. Half Life 2 - meh
5. Super Mario World - looks decent, i think this was the best mario overall
6. Zelda: A Link to the Past - id rather put zelda 1 and drop it a couple spots
7. Halo: Combat Evolved - i can see it, but id rather see goldeneye
8. Final Fantasy XII - wtf, not even in the top 3 of FF, take the best one and put it somewhere in the top 3 of this list
9. Tetris - i guess
10. Super Metroid - i guess

Did they mean Final Fantasy VII?

I think the list (well, at least the top 10) is actually decent. I actually prefer both Mario 64 and Super Mario World to SMB3, but I realize I'm in the minority on that one. Never played HL2, and it sounds good, but from what I've heard it doesn't belong that high in a greatest games list.
