Do I have the right to think this was a stupid play by an opponent?
I was playing in the Bike's Mini-Series 1:00pm $75+15 tourney yesterday. Blinds are at 50/100. I'm in the BB w/ about $1900. There are a couple limpers plus the SB and the pot has $400 when it gets to me. I have J-J and raise it to $400 and one guy calls. This one guy had been fairly loose all day and had limped and called raises a few times. He had about $3200.
Flop comes down 3d-5s-9d. Holding an over pair and seeing two diamonds on the board, I decide to put my last $1500 w/ $1100 in the pot and call all-in. He takes about 1 second and says, "Ok, I'll gamble with you" and he flips over Qd-10d. I couldn't believe he called almost half of his stack on a pure draw while knowing he was behind. 3c comes off on the turn and he spikes a queen on the river. I thought it was a fairly dumb play for him to make that call, but didn't pop off (not my style). Opinions? |

Re: Do I have the right to think this was a stupid play by an opponent?
It's a micro buy-in (by live Vegas live standards), so you are going to get crappy people making bad calls.
He figures he has a flush draw, and a ten and a queen might be good if he hits as well. You lost on basically a coiblfip postflop. You got your money in as a 55% favorite, and lost. It happens. Yes, technically it is a bad call for him to make. But you WANT him to make that call; you are ahead, and getting your chips in while ahead is not a bad thing... |

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I was pretty happy when I turned it over, but still was surprised he made that call.

I hate your retarded pf raise. Why not raise it up to 800 or 1k pre?

Well first off, you shouldn't ever call people stupid or consider peoples plays stupid.
Secondly, you should have raised more preflop. Third, I like being ahead when I get the money. Sometimes people suckout. If you can't deal with it, don't play poker. |

I kinda like just shoving preflop here, 400 is too small & anything else commits you anyway. As played as the cards lay it was a good call for villian on the flop...yeah sometimes his Q isnt live but sometimes his T is, so it isn't a stupid call from him at all.

That's why I asked if I had the right to think it was a stupid play. Maybe stupid wasn't the right word. Reckless would have been a better choice. Anyway, thanks for the input.

Re: Do I have the right to think this was a stupid play by an opponent
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I've only been playing live tournies for about a year now and know that I'm still learning. There are some things I could have done differently and I don't begrudge the guy as much as I did while walking away. Just because I wouldn't make that play doesn't mean it's wrong. Thanks again.
