Default Temporary User Profile on Windows XP?

just turned on my computer, and at the user profile blue screen, clicked my user profile and got the following message:

"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on using a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off" with a little countdown clock.

i was using my computer two hours ago without any problems, and now can't get back into my original user profile. anyone know how to fix this?

edit: i'm running xp and all the service packs are up to date.

thanks

Funny, this exact problem just happened to my mom. You probably have a corrupted user profile. Follow the instructions here to copy your profile to a new account: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318011
