Default Letter from Rep. Michael Castle (R - DE) - seems open-minded

Not long ago I sent a letter to Representative Michael Castle (R-Delaware) via the PPA's letter-sending campaign. I got a snail-mail response today that is somewhat encouraging.

I have only lived in the area for 3 years, and usually vote with a center to left-center mindset. I voted for Castle because he has a good reputation as a moderate Republican who tends to support what he feels is right rather than what his party majority thinks that he should support.

I'm not going to re-type the whole letter, but this is what is included:

1st paragraph: general thank-you
2nd paragraph: basic summary of online gambling's growth and debatable legal status
3rd paragraph: summary of UIGEA

4th paragraph:
[ QUOTE ]

I am supportive of the many legal options for gambling in the greater Delaware area and I feel that it is important to allow legal gambling to continue. While I am not opposed to regulated gambling, unregulated gambling, operating across state lines without any guidelines or oversight, is a cause for concern. Because it is largely unregulated, Internet gambling fails to block access by minors, is appealing to organized crime and money launderers, and lacks effective safeguards against fraud. It is important, that like established legal gambling, Internet gambling have rules and guidelines established to protect societal interests.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm very happy to see that he has an open mind about the matter, and apparently doesn't feel that prohibition is the answer. He sits on the House Financial Services Committee, so I plan to write him back to encourage him to support measures such as Barney Frank's bill.

Come on TBL, have some faith in humanity. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove that they don't deserve it.

Funny--one of the major complaints from people is that all they send back are generic forum letters that don't address their specific concerns.

Which would you rather have?

I would rather have the more personalized response. No doubt. I plan to write him back, too.

No, unfortunately. A few weeks ago the PPA sent snail-mail letters, and I volunteered to have letters sent on my behalf to my congressmen.
