Best place to Travel/Life out West for a few months?

I live in Ohio and my best friend and I want to visit the west for a few months. We are fresh out of college and We have a few thousand saved up as travel money and could always work doing simple for spending cash. We need some suggestions. We are looking for something with a moderate cost of living. So no to California. We are also looking for something we some nice scenery. Suggestions?

If you have a couple grand saved up already, I don't really see why you need to exclude Cali if you're interested in it.

There are some really nice hostels in CA. Also northern cal (above SF) is the one of the nicest parts and is affordable. Baja CA works for nice hot beaches very cheap.

BTW any poor college kids who want to see some CA scenery - work in Big Sur for a summer. Unbelievable gorgeous place and lots of fun kids work the summer there.

OP, you could give us a little more info about what you are interested in doing, or throw out a few places that you are interested in checking out. as it stands now, poor effort.

I'd highly recommend getting to the red woods on the coast between California and Oregon. It's amazing.

Arizona. We have the Grand Canyon, Sedona, you can go tubing down the Salt Lake, spend time at our lakes/rivers, visit historic Route 66, and of course, stop in on Vegas. : )

Lake Tahoe. Probably too expensive, but worth it.
