Default The bipartisan issue no one speaks of

The Economist ran a recent story about the electoral college. Discover magazine ran an article in 2000 explaining how the American voting system works from a purely mathematical standpoint.

Dramatically different fields reach the same conclusion: the way we vote in America is a disaster. The model simply does not work. Plurality voting fails in theory and practice. It relies on the ignorant voter voting in a random fashion. This is not what happens in practice, rather the ignorant voter is manipulated. Approval voting, runoff voting, there are a wide array of voting models that are based on real mathematical and psychological models instead of arbitration.

Why is no action being taken? Without a doubt plurality voting gives the two parties in a two party system uncontrollable power. With only two categorical entities in congress, why would there be any incentive to take power away from themselves? Unfortunately to undo the plurality vote we must also undo the way congress works and the two party system. No action can be taken without going through the most greedy and careless congress in history.

Which Congress is number two on the greed and carelessness scale and what makes this Congress greedier and/or more careless? Which Congress has been the most generous and careful and what generous and/or careful actions stand out?

It would help if the articles you cite supported your thesis.

As much as I hate to be a pollmonger, perhaps the 24% approval rating has something to do with it?

@MrMon - "the way we vote in America is a disaster" was my thesis. Please elaborate on how my articles do not reinforce this point.
