Is this rake excessive?

I was at a private 5/10 NLHE game over the weekend which was ridiculously soft, but they rake 10% up to $10 on any hand which makes it to the flop. Being mainly an online player I'm wondering if this is normal for live games of this sort, given that free food and drinks are provided along with a dealer. Apparently they also run a 2/5 game which is capped at $7. Should I be looking for a better deal? Thanks.

$7 is bad for a B&M cardroom, with dealers and a wait staff.

If you have no other options, or the game is so soft you can make a lot more than that rake, then play in it.

excessive by casino standards, not for underground game. If it is "ridiculously soft" Id play there w/o any hesitation

I'd be screaming rape and covering my ass the whole way home after that game, regardless of how I ran.

Some of you are such nits. $10 is considered "high" but certainly not uncommon. Only problem with these places is that they get greedy no matter how much they're making. If you catch a dealer double raking or other shady [censored], kindly don't say anything but do yourself a favor and dont' go back. Do they expect dealer tokes? If so then it should be a $5 max rake, but some places still expect both. If so don't go crazy with the tokes but also don't stiff... it gives you a bad rep with the hosts.

And in the kind of "home" game that rakes $10, you'd be beaten or shot for your trouble. I'd just finish out my session as normal, cash out, and never return.

Anything over 5 or 6 buck and you're getting raped.

Find a new game.
