Default How do you calculate equity?

I am a math guy, but I have no idea how those percentages come up on those televised tournament. When I watch PAD or HSP, players say that someone's 3-1 favorite, 4-1 dog, and etc. I know rules of 4 and 2, but I do not know how those equity percentages come up. Can anyone tell me how to calculate the percentage out?

You won't need to know the exact percentage to know where you're at. The TV tables take into account the cards that they can see, so the actual percentages will vary depending on remote flush possibiliites, straight possibilities, or whether some of the outs are in the muck. But the remote flush and straight possibilities are too small to alter make a difference in the decision-making process, and you'll never know how many or whether your outs are no longer in play.
