Default Tipping Cash

I saw a guy doing the following at a 4/8 table once. Next to his chips on the table he kept a roll of $1 coins (the reasonably new gold ones). Each time he won a pot, he tipped not with a chip, but with one of the gold coins.

At the time I thought "What a retard" and ordered another drink. In retrospect, I've thought of one distinct advantage and one plausible advantage of doing this:

1. This slyly allows you to keep a few more chips in your stack. At a NL table with a capped buy in this could afford you a small advantage.

2. Cash tips could possibly go unreported by the dealers (this is plausible, but I have no evidence at all).

Does anyone have any comments on 1, 2, or how big of a retard this would make you look to the other players (and while we're at it, whether or not it's good to look like said retard)?
