Default Buying electronics in China

My dads going to be down there for a week and I was wondering if it would save me some money if I had him buy me a phone, ipod, or anyother electronics? Anyone ever been down there and done this? He'll be in Shanghai.

I wasn't in Shanghai for very long so maybe I just didn't know the right spots, but if it's anything like Hong Kong, stuff won't be cheaper. They have cooler stuff but it's about the same price.

Bootlegs on the other hand are widely available and very cheap.

Hope you speak Chinese if you're going to buy one of these things. Most likely there will be an option inside the device to switch to English but without being able to read Chinese, good luck finding the menu to do that.

Shanghai is not the place for electronics shopping. You will not save a dime and in many cases, may pay more.

Guangzhou is where you would save on electronics.

If you want to shop in Shanghai for discounts, mainly on textiles, go to QiPu Wholesale market (pronounced Chi-Pu). Always offer 20% of what they ask and then walk away when they say no.

They will chase you down and accept 90% of the time.

You cannot save much money on electronics anywhere except HongKong, you can haggle some everywhere and save a bit ofcourse but the money you save is on the tax and you can only get that in HK, you're better off haggling in your own town and then you have a receipt and stuff.

But yeh if you're there for a few days or weeks you aren't going to find the good markets and you are going to pay too much anyway so why bother go get some asian hookers and blow and party up yo.
