Getting into chess, site recommendations

I decided to start playing chess again, and right now I am ChessWorld.net (www.letsplaychess.com) and it kind of sucks unless you are a paying member. I don't know anything about which chess sites are good etc., and I really don't want to pay money unless the site is good. Any recommendations?

freechess.org ftw, u need to download an interface as well, i have XP and use winboard.
