Cormac McCarthy Gives an Interview to Oprah
WTF?!?!? Very disappointing to me since I hate Oprah and McCarthy is my current favorite author. The interview is significant because McCarthy never does interviews. I guess there must be some truth to the critics who say McCarthy is selling out. The criticism first arose when No Country For Old Men was released. They said McCarthy wrote the book just so he could sell the movie rights. Anyone who reads the book I think will realize that it won't make jack [censored] in Hollywood unless the ending is drastically changed.
I'm also kind of surprised Oprah chose The Road for her Book of the Month Club. It's a trendy pick but I'll bet dollars to donuts that if you hooked up Oprah BotM club members to a lie detector, less than 10% would say they liked the book. In any event, good job for McCarthy finally cashing in. He's an old man and he probably felt a responsibility to bequeath something substantial to his young son in the event that McCarthy is not able to provide for him. |

Re: Cormac McCarthy Gives an Interview to Oprah
He's one of my favorite authors as well and I liked No Country For Old Men. Obviously not his best book, but still very good. The movie has already been filmed and screened at Cannes. The Coen brothers made the film, and I think they're a good choice.
The movie has gotten rave reviews. If only more authors could sell out by writing top notch novels that are turned into top notch movies. |

Re: Cormac McCarthy Gives an Interview to Oprah
The Road was not terribly impressive compared to Blood Meridian and The Border Trilogy. Or even Suttree. As for giving Oprah an interview, who cares? Were you pissed at Thomas Pynchon for appearing on The Simpsons? Twice?

It seems most of the books she selects are of high "literary merit", and of course the Oprah Book Club is a powerful marketing launching platform for any new release... I know Jonathan Franzen, after "The Corrections" was selected for the Oprah Book Club, refused to go on her show for fear of ruining his literary credibility, but I thought this was widely viewed as a dick move (ie overly pretentious). -Al |

GTL - interesting. The initial reviews sound awesome but that doesn't mean much. Do you think the movie will top $100m gross?

Re: Cormac McCarthy Gives an Interview to Oprah
I thought "No Country for Old Men" was outstanding, and I'll definitely see the movie. I have no idea what kind of success the movie will enjoy, because if it isn't Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, or Stephen King, most movie-goers haven't heard of most novelists.

Boris,
I'm with Amp. The Simpsons is just about as cult or non-mainstream as Oprah. |
