Default Getting a Root Canal

I am getting a root canal on Friday morning and am supposed to go to work afterward (my job requires quite a bit of talking) Any input from anybody that has had this done recently?? Will it be possible to speak well (or at all) during the day?

Does it require you to speak coherently?

Yes, but it is all "in person" conversations, not much phone.

I recently had one done, and I had no trouble speaking at all. Though they did numb one side of my mouth so I had trouble eating and drinking. Speaking though, was fine.

It shouldn't be so bad. It might be difficult immediately afterwards, but once the novocaine wears off a little, you're good to go.

no more difficult to talk than after a cavity is filled. i have had 3 root canals and don't understand why people make them out to be so terrible.

Yeah, route canals are not painful at all. Getting your widsom teeth removed is what hurts.

100% correct. Difference being that root canals sometimes hurt like hell BEFORE the procedure, but not afterwards, whereas from what I've heard wisdom teeth removal totally sucks ass after the fact.

I had three root canals within a few months of each other a few years ago, only ones I ever had. The third one was so bad I was averaging 20-24 Advils/day just to get through life. I'd wake up in pain, pop four, and go back to sleep. The specialist said it was one of the worst cases he'd ever seen and prescribed me Vicodin, but for the most part it's not that bad and the pain is romanticized.

OP, seems like general concensus is you'll be ok, and from my experience on OOT, I've come to respect tuq's posts (lol! how funny) BUT I do know that my mother has had root canal a number of times and the reports have NOT been of praise.

Whether you go in to work or not, good luck. Inevitably my terrible love of Coca-Cola and lack of dental hygiene will probably mean I'll need this sh*t done at some point, and I wouldn't mind more opinions like tuq's rather than my mother's. GL.

As a dental student who is in the process of applying for an Endodontic Residency (specialist in root canals), this thread makes me happy.

Generally speaking you will be fine afterwards except for the initial numbness from the local anesthesia. In most cases advil/motrin is fine for any post op pain. The only real worry afterwords is knocking out the temporary filling before your dentists places the final restoration (almost always a crown).
