question on which books to buy if I am switching from limit to nl
I have decided that I would like to try no limit, and am interested in reading some books before I venture into the casino with only a limit background. I have played some sngs and 2 mtts and did pretty well in them but only one nl cash game. I got killed in the nl cash game.
I would like to read up on nl but don't know where to start. Which books do you suggest? Any advice is appreciated. I do have Theory of Poker, it is a little over my head but I am getting through it. I don't have anything specifically geared for NL hold em though yet. Besides books, if you have any other words of wisdom, please share. |

Re: question on which books to buy if I am switching from limit to nl
I like Angel Largay's NL book. It is good for beginners and focuses on small fixed buy in games.
No Limit Holdem Theory & Practice is a wonderful book. Rolf Slotboom has a set of DVD's about switching from Limit to NL holdem and they are really good. |

'Improve your poker' and 'pot and no limit poker' both explain adjustments to make for players coming from a limit background. They'd be my first 2 books.
I'd probably then go onto HOH 1, and Sklanskys no limit theory book. |

i'd probably most highly recommend LGB......
interesting that when barry greenstein came into that one thread he said he'd rather his son had just started in NL, not limit.... my opinion has always been that you should play limit first. see tons of hands and the value of hands etc.... but barry thought that limit teaches too many NL habits, and i'm coming around to that view |

There's some redundancy with NLHTAP, but I still like them. He does a nice job of contrasting how he'd play hands differently in limit vs NL. |

Re: question on which books to buy if I am switching from limit to nl
HOH1 is a great grounding the basics of all NL play. You do have to read it properly so you can see why certain situations might not apply to cash games but IMO it's the best intro into the game. There are so many hand examples you get schooled into basic NL value play. NL is about situations and so seeing lots of them is very helpful, rather than theory which is hard to apply. Once you can go through the book and get the questions correct you should have a decent grip on basic NL. If you play NL you have to read HOH1.
The stickies on the micro and small stakes forums here are great and include starting hand guidelines which I found immensely useful in transferring from limit. LGB is well worth a read too. Personally I found NLHTAP to be quite misleading initially so I couldn't recommend it as an early book. Limit players are already thinking about maths enough and it's the situational element of NL that is hard to grasp and other books helped me more. |

In his article in cardplayer, Joe Sebok tells us to start with Limit holdem because of what barry said. "Also, and I stress this, start with limit hold'em games. I don't know if he has read TOP. I'm pretty sure he has read Sklansky's limit poker books, since he started playing limit. By the way, I now regret that he started playing limit hold'em instead of no-limit. I never knew he would turn into a decent tournament player. Many times I feel he makes mistakes that limit players make: 1) calling normal sized bets with a draw on the turn. 2) calling on the river with an obvious calling hand in limit (top pair or better) but not realizing it's not worth the call against a solid no-limit player. interesting. I wonder how Joe feels about it. In the article i posted, Sebok really pitches the idea that learning Limit first was beneficial to his development.
Thanks for the link to the thread and the info |
