A friend told me this, so I can't vouch for it's accuracy, but supposedly about 2 years ago Barry said he wanted to break Ruth's "record" much moreso than Aaron's because it's the last batting record "they" (white people) have.

Depending on what you mean by batting records, HR/RBI/BB/SB are all held by non-whites. But the theory doesn't make any sense because why would he want to pass Ruth? Aaron already took HR away from "them."

Anyway, I'm sure it's his knee rather than any desire to pass Ruth but not Aaron that is motivating his decision. Also, the Giants aren't looking that good and they are absurdly old so he can't plausibly hang around for a ring.

If I was an AL contender's GM I'd offer him a 1 year, $5 million contract for 2007 where he doesn't have to report to the team until September 1st.

Yeah, he mentioned on more than one ocassion that he cares more about breaking Ruth's record than Aaron's. He pulls out the race card every time the media gives him a hard time, but he's the real racist.

From what I remember, his actual stated reason for wanting to pass Ruth while not really caring if he passed Aaron or not was because he wanted to wipe Ruth out of the record book for most HRs by a left-handed hitter.
