Protecting an overpair in a large field / River \"value bet\"
This is classical but it always drives me nuts. The only information I have at the table is that it is FULL of LPP players, so don't expect anything except for an occasional raise.
PokerStars 0.50/1.00 Hold'em (9 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums) Preflop: Hero is MP1 with J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. MP3 posts a blind of $0.50. UTG calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, 1 fold, MP3 (poster) calls, CO calls, 2 folds, BB calls, UTG calls. Flop: (10.50 SB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players) BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, MP3 calls, CO folds, BB calls, UTG calls. Turn: (7.25 BB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (4 players) BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, MP3 folds, BB calls, UTG folds. River: (9.25 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players) BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls. (!!!) I bet, I bet, I bet. At no point I knew where I was standing. To me the guy was weak or scared, and would have bet for value on the river if he had that flush. He checked, so I bet, Ed Miller says it's the way to win at LLHE. Was I right? How should I protect my overpair in this LARGE field? Do you check behind on the river? |

Re: Protecting an overpair in a large field / River \"value bet\"
Where were you going to slow down? Why? You make money betting made hands against people who don't fold. Most of the time, with over pairs, you bet until someone tells you not to. In fact, if you bet overpairs every time it is checked to you that's good.

Re: Protecting an overpair in a large field / River \"value bet\"
Thanks. I was just wondering if there is a super-fancy way to get some of them to fold on the flop or on the turn...'cause vs. 4 other players I usually need to dodge at least any A,K,Q or T to win the hand. But I didn't feel like trying to C/R here with so many passive players...
if not I'll stick to straight forward HE |

How should I protect my overpair in this LARGE field? [/ QUOTE ] Why don't you try to tell us how you think you might protect your overpair in a large field, and we'll tell you if it's a good idea. In other words, what do you think you might have done differently? (fwiw, Xhad is right, I'm just trying to stimulate a little conversation so that maybe you'll learn something.) |

Strategically, if you do ANYTHING EVERY time SOMETHING ELSE happens, that's NOT good. Tactically, I can think of plenty of situations where you're going to check on the flop with an overpair. |

Re: Protecting an overpair in a large field / River \"value bet\"
As I said in the previous post. C/R?
If I'm in early position and see a guy on my left (CO or Button) who COULD be willing to bet, I'd usually try to check raise him so it's 2 bet back to the MP passive limpers. This is the only spot, I guess, where I could do something differently...here in this hand I was pretty stuck with a bet, bet, bet. |
