My Daughter is going to Germany!

Brag - my Daughter is going to Germany as a foreign exchange student!

Beat - we really don't know a lot of what to expect.

Where is the best exchange rate for euros? Is it better to use euros or credit cards? What credit cards do they take? What is the best way to make phone calls as her cell phone will not work there. Any other helpful info would be appreciated. Thank you!

I just came back from being abroad. When she's there only pull money out of ATM's - they have the best exchange rate. Pull out as much as possible each time because the charge will be like 7bucks but for the 300euro each time its not bad.

Tell her to buy a cheap cell phone there. If you call her it will be free for her and cheaper overall. Skype is awesome - download it and use it constantly.

I studied in Regensburg, so feel free to PM me if that's where she's going to be.

She'll buy a cell phone over there, or buy a german cell from a student at her school who just got back. You'd have to check the rates, but it may be cheaper to get some kind of VoIP than make international calls on the cell.

I took a set amount of money out of the ATM every two weeks and would on occasion use my AmEx where it was accepted.

I went to Germany as part of an exchange program as well. I used a visa debit card through bank of america when i was there and it worked pretty well. I was able to get cash from ATMs, as somebody said before, tell her to take out the max whenever she needs money as the fees are the same no matter how much you take out. Also make sure to get her an international phone card and make her memorize the numbers or write them down in a few places in case she has an emergency. Other than that, tell her to have fun [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img].
