When to defend bring in?
Howdy. New to 2+2...and I apologize in advance if this question should have been asked in the "Beginner" section. But when should I defend a bring in if someone completes, in general?...in all variations of stud, ie. hi, 8OB, razz.
I believe the answers to 8OB and razz is rarely, if ever...but I don't know if that is the generally accepted opinion amongst the experts. It is stud hi where I am unsure. There are two basic scenarios where I don't know what is technically correct. Assume these situations occur in a 1/2 game with .20 antes and .25 bring in. 1) I bring in with (KQ)2 and a 9 completes and everone else folds...do defend, if so, call or raise. If there was a caller behind the 9 with a T or J upcard, does that change my decision with a slighly larger pot? 2)I bring in with (27)2, a J completes in middle position and everyone else folds, do I defend, if so, call or raise? If there were a Q who called the J's compete, would that change my decison with a better price from the pot? What if my 7 were a K or A, would that change my decison? Again, just in general how should I be thinking in these situations and why? Any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated. |

Re: When to defend bring in?
In stud hi it greatly depends on what what kind of board the raiser is raising into. For example if everyone folds to the second to last card, and it is a 9, and you have the bring-in with a 2, the raiser should be raising 100% here. In this case I would call with as little as 235 given that there is a full round of antes in there. You will fold 4th if he bets and you have not caught a pair or A, 4, 6. On the other hand if the 9 raises into a K, a J, and then your 2 bring-in, his range is now quite strong and he has at the minimum a 3-straight or 3-flush, more likely a split pair. In this case you would fold lots of pairs, only calling with a minimum of something like T22, and also probably a 3-flush for implied odds, depending on how live your cards are. So your basic thought process when considering defending versus a raise is: 1. What range of hands does this opponent likely have given his 3rd street situation (i.e. what board is he raising into), and 2. How do I fare versus this distribution, considering the liveness of my cards. |
