Default lol @ Gila River OR Why I will never marry again (LC)

I had one of those head-shaking conversations w/ a manager at Gila River's poker room and I feel like sharing:

I went down there today to play their amazing 8-16 while waiting for the amazing 15-30 to start. The 8-16 wasn't going at 2pm and I sat in the amazing 6-12 but this is just an aside.

Gila River (at the Wild Horse Pass location) is remodeling the interior. There's not much they can do w/ the exterior which happens to be hideous. I remember driving up to it the first time and it looked like a giant animal had made a big poop in the desert. To be fair, CAZ's Indian Bend location (2 connected tents) looks like 2 big pink condoms at night so they are sort of even in that department.

Anyway, since the beginning (~ 8 years) cell phones couldn't get reception in the poker room and they never did anything about it. There is a phone at the desk for free local calls that I wanted to use but it was out of service so since they are remodling to make an actual poker room instead of the poker area that they have now I thought that I'd ask a manager (happened to be a woman) if they were going to install whatever device is necessary to make cell phone reception possible in the poker room. Another female manager spoke up and said no.

Herewith the conversation, pretty much:

'No? Why not?'
'Because it's not necessary.'
'What do you mean not necessary? Nobody's cell phone works in the poker room. How much can some sort of antenna cost? And, since you're remodling, this is the time to install it.'
'It's not necessary because ALLTEll works in the poker room.'
'So what? I have T-MOBILE.'
'But ALLTELL works and that means that it's T-MOBILE's fault. If they would have a good system they would work in here to.'
'Do you mean to say that since just ONE system works and T-MOBILE, SPRINT, CINGULAR, AT&T and all the rest don't work it's THEIR fault and not the casinos'?
'That's right. If they would fix whatever is wrong with their systems everything would be ok.'
'Have you told all these big cell-phone companies that their systems are faulty and the reason you think so?'
'No. They should realize it on their own.'
'Your serious?'
'Yes.'

Well, I don't give a damn if I get barred from Gila River since I don't go there much so, ever the diplomat I said:

'Only a woman could come up with something so incredibly stupid and YOU are the reason I'll never get married again, God forbid.'
'I don't like that remark.'
'Too bad.'

But I didn't get tossed out.

Like I said, I just felt like telling the story. Thanks for listening. If you ever decide to go to Gila River don't expect your cell phone to work in the poker room unless you've got ALLTELL and you could also do me a favor and ask them to upgrade their facility.

Why are you so hung up about cell phones...I would rather play without my cell phone all day every day. I only bring it when I have plans later in the evening that I will get a call about, other than that, no cell phone in the poker room for me...

Not that I care for cell phones all that much but since I'm paying for the service I'd like to be able to use it. You might also want to consider that there are a vast number of players playing in the daytime work hours because they can stay in touch with/run their businesses because of the cell phones they carry. I'm convinced that if there were no cell phones daytime attendance in the poker rooms would plummet. All you have to do is listen in on some of the conversations that players are having on their phones to know this is true.

Besides, it would cost them a relative pittance to fix. I remember reading that when Wynn's poker room first opened cell phones didn't work too well inside it either and they fixed the problem so it can be done pretty easily.

I have never before heard anyone suggest that the owner of a building was resposnible for making cell service available in the building. I have always considered whether I can get service somewhere to be a function of the service provided by my provider (Sprint) and the laws of physics.

They are inviting the public into their poker room and soliciting their business for which they charge a great deal of money. Players can be there for many hours. They know that cell phones are very important to who knows how many people and the solution is not very difficult or expensive, AFAIK. Customer service. Whatever happened to that? They provide a free phone (which was out of service today). They do that because they know that people have to stay in touch. Plus, I didn't like her answer and it got me mad. So to heck w/ them.

How would the owner of a building "make" cell phone service available? OP is dumb and totaly ignorant of how cell phone's work. Obviously this is all women's fault. hahaha.
Good thing it was a woman, if it was a man he would probably tell you got go [censored] yourself, [censored] your cellphone, and tell you were to stick it.

What, you don't think that they can install some sort of device inside their pile of doody that they call a casino? Talk about who is dumb about how cell phones work, hahahaha! Tell me: How do they make cell phones work OUTSIDE, hmmmmm? And you think they can't make cell phones work INSIDE? I bet they could get something from Radio Shack for $2.99.

As for her being a woman and coming up with such a dumb, idiotic and absurd answer to a paying customer that they are raking thru the nose, why, that's only natural! Women! YOU go marry one and good luck to you!

Seriously, what kind of stupid answer was it that she gave me? It'd be better to just lie to me and say that there was nothing that they could do. Instead she tells me that it is all the fault of cell phone companies whose phones work everywhere else INCLUDING right outside the door of the casino.

btw: If you played at Gila River and experienced some of their rules and procedures you wouldn't be surprised that they have a manager who could come up with such a dopey answer. So take that!

ps: I am virtually certain that Wynn had the exact same problem in their poker room when the place first opened up. I remember reading about it in some of the reviews and that the management told the players it would take about a month to fix and that is what happened. So take that again! Obviously a MAN is in charge of Wynn's poker operations.

Disclaimer: Hopefully readers realize that all of this dumping on women stuff is all tongue-in-cheek. I absolutely adore women (most of them) and would love one to pieces if she would ever let me catch her which she won't.

Edit to add:

Gee whiz! Look what I found!!!

OOOOH, LOOK!!! I found ANOTHER one!!!

YIKES!!! There are ever MORE over here!!!

Well, if this magic device is only $2.99 and available at Radio Shack, why don't you go buy one and bring it with you?

Howard, I'm a woman too so maybe I don't get your logic. I don't want cell phone reception in any poker room ever. I don't like wives and girlfriends nagging players to get off the table and go home. I wish every poker room would install a cell phone blocker like hospitals do. The worst I've heard so far is a poor man in Tunica who got a phone call from his SO who was in JAIL wanting him to bail her out. Jesus. Good for him, he nicely told her that he couldn't help her and continued to play but a lot of guys succumb to any repeated calls and nagging. The last thing I need is for players to get called away by drama queens, nagging partners, and dependent significant others.

Male buddies and "others" at least show up and do the nagging in person. It's because they want to borrow money to keep playing as long as their friend is playing, sure, but at least they have to make an effort to get off their hind legs, drive to the poker room, and find their friend before the nagging starts. I just plain don't think it's right that all someone has to do is get on a stupid phone and start nagging someone from a distance and interfering with players in a game. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Drama is a sad reality of life for losers, but the less drama that comes to these people over the cell phone when they're trying to lose their money, the better as far as I'm concerned. In any event, as the woman says, she isn't in charge of where the cell phone companies put their towers. I haven't found the company yet that provides complete coverage of everywhere I go. Explain this: I can make a phone call on Verizon from the rain forest in Puerto Rico or Diamondhead in Honolulu but not from Big Bend, West Texas. There I would have to use Cingular or nothing. No poker rooms in any of these areas to be blamed for the differences in service. It's towers, plain and simple. Not familiar with the area you mention, but perhaps there's a similar issue there?
