the wonder of it all: or how i berated a dealer for the first time
i would never have EVER believed this except that i was in the game and saw it with my own eyes.....
foxwoods $100 tourney within the last week i forget the exact day, i am in the 6 seat. two players shove all-in preflop, 30-ish white guy with AK and old foreign guy with AJ, young guy covers. board reads, A6672 with no possible flush old guy says, "thats a chop, right? i play the board for my kicker" (in his defense i dont think he had ever played poker in a casino before) dealer sits there dumbfounded for a solid two minutes while everybody wonders what the hell he is thinking about, then announces he has no idea what hand wins, and CALLS THE FLOOR TO ASK WHAT HAND WINS, it takes almost another three minutes to finally get a floor as he had to settle another dispute (this i obviously do not blame on foxwoods and actually felt bad for the floorperson) floor is shocked at the complete idiocy, and then has to argue with the old man for ANOTHER five minutes while the floor explains this. total time wasted while the blinds went up and everyone else kept playing, slightly over 10 minutes. myself as well as the other players at the table were absolutely livid at his level of incompetence, and let him know it rather loudly that he has screwed us out of play, and how could he ever pass the training without knowing what hands beat what, etc (mind you that in between this delay the blinds went from 100-200 25 ante to 200-400 50 ante)....i guess in retrospect maybe we shouldnt have berated him once it was over but was absolutely furious at the time as i felt i was getting [censored] out of enough hands that i had immediately dropped to a shortstack because of the stoppage and blind raise, and rightly so. was anyone else around to see this? |

When the dealer is that incompetent, the blame is better placed on whoever is doing the hiring and/or training. He should never have passed an audition or completed dealer school - if he actually went to dealer school at all.
This was probably some poorly trained new guy that was thrown to the sharks, because the poker room needed a warm body to run a game. |

Re: the wonder of it all: or how i berated a dealer for the first time
How did the players let it get it to that point? If the dealer legitimately took 2 minutes trying to read the board, someone (perhaps you) should have nicely explained to the dealer what the winning hand was. While it's not your responsibility, you have sort of a moral obligation to help out, if the dealer is incompetent. I feel the fact that this took 10 minutes lies heavily on the fact that no one stepped up to help out.

That's kind of true too. I know when I was new I learned a lot from the players in the game, and they helped catch a lot of the rookie mistakes I was making. Most are pretty understanding - every dealer is new at some point.
With this guy, he's probably going to learn real fast or he's not going to make it very far. |

How did the players let it get it to that point? [/ QUOTE ] "They both have aces over sixes, he has a king kicker, he has a jack, king wins." If that doesn't do the trick, point out what two cards are not playing... The two low cards on the board don't play. Thus the dealer can ignore them completely. Now read the hands. Again, aces and sixes, kickers play. It is bizzare this took more than 20 seconds to sort out. |

Re: the wonder of it all: or how i berated a dealer for the first time
i am constantly amazed by how many people get this kicker thing fouled up, luckily the dealer sets them srtaight in about 5 seconds about 99.9% of the time.
my fav...10/20 lhe, 2 players, final board reads JJJJ9 p1 keeps raising and re-raising player 2 on the river. p2 finally calls and shows AK, p1 shows 99. proceeds to piss and moan for at least half an hour about getting screwed out of the pot....priceless! |

Re: the wonder of it all: or how i berated a dealer for the first time
This is not the dealer's fault and he should not have been berated. It is not incompetence, it is poor training or the fact that the guy shouldn't be a dealer. The casino should be berated, not the poor man who didn't know who to read the hand.
