Default Mildly Amusing Homeless Person Anecdote

Lately, I've been doing much of my food shopping at Costco, which often leaves me with a surplus of perishable items. Often I will toss some in my car to give to bums/homeless people at stoplights. Yesterday this very situation occurs: a homeless man goes car-to-car at a stoplight looking for handouts, rubbing his stomach to say "I'm hungry." I open my window and offer him a perfectly fresh loaf of rye bread, in its wrapper (at Costco when you get bread they give you two loaves, it's more rye than I can eat before it gets stale). Homeless guy sneers at me and says, somewhat angrily, "What am I supposed to put on it?" and walks away. Guys in the car next to me totally cracked up. All I could do was shake my head and smile.

In retrospect, my line should've been "Maybe somebody else will give you a ham."

Apparently the homeless are pickier than me, I eat bread all the time lol. What a strange encounter.

why do you buy two loaves and give one away? are 2 loaves at costco cheaper than 1 loaf at a regular store? ordo you pay a littl emore so you can help out the homeless?

Cost-wise, I suspect it's close, but I don't really know. Most of all, I like the rye there better than the rye at the market. For a while we'd give the extra loaf to my wife's grandmother, but she's back in the nursing home.

sometiems you cant buy just one loaf, I learned this lesson when I was forced to buy 16 hotdogs buns saturday at sam's club, and my mom bought some tortilla chips, just one bag, but the lady made me go back and get 2 bags, becuase she couldnt sell just one.

That reminds me of when I lived in LA and me and the GF had just eaten at Birds. There's an old homeless guy that always hangs out on that little stretch across from the Scientology Center. I dug for change and gave him, like, 23 cents or something, which was all the change I had. He said something along the lines of, "What can you buy with 23 cents?" and threw it on the ground.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.
