Re: Best movie to never be nominated for Best Picture
If we limit ourselves to English language films, Vertigo, 2001 and The Searchers are probably 1,2,3. The Searchers didn't even get a single nod, so it probably wins that distinction hands down.

Re: Best movie to never be nominated for Best Picture
usually, the films are from 1939...here are the nominees for Best Picture that year:
Dark Victory Gone With the wind Goodbye Mr. Chips Love Affair Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Ninotchka Of Mice and Men Stagecoach The Wizard of Oz Wuthering Heights As you can see, they nominated more films back then. Now here's a list of films from 1939 NOT nominated: Destry Rides Again The Four Feathers The Hunchback Of Notre Dame It’s A Wonderful World Rules Of The Game The Women Bachelor Mother Dark Victory Gunga Din The Hound Of The Baskervilles Son Of Frankenstein You Can’t Cheat An Honest Man The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes Intermezzo Only Angels Have Wings As you can see, 1939 was a hell of a year for great movies! |

Of recent note, I'd say Malcom X and/or Do the Right Thing rank up there.

Re: Best movie to never be nominated for Best Picture
I'd also throw in Blade Runner, Dead Man Walking, The Empire Strikes Back, Amelie, and many more...
but like another poster said, I'd have to go with The Searchers, as it's widely considered to be one of the 10 best films of all-time. |
