Spyware scanners-- More harmful than helpful?
I recently had a computer tech. work on my laptop and he recommended against using any spyware removal tools (adaware, etc.). He said that these programs mess your computer up more than if you had used nothing. Is there any truth to this? He recommended ONLY using NOD32 virus scan and nothing else (no registry cleaners, spyware cleaners, or other system tools). Should I follow his advice?

Re: Spyware scanners-- More harmful than helpful?
The Microsoft Malware Removal tool is incredibly easy to run and doesn't interfere with your use at all. I recommend it. SpyBot is more intrusive, but I don't mind it. If you turn-off the questions and just use it to scan, it's just as good as a virus scan, but more pointed towards spyware.
I'd never heard of NOD32, which isn't a great sign (but honestly isn't all that telling. ) I'd recommend AVG or Avast. Or both. |

NOD32 has a very good reputation.
But I don't think there are huge problems with free software to severely mess up your computer. |
