Default Dealer Protocol - Omaha

Player tables his hand, turns the whole hand over, however the cards are overlapping and you can only really read 2 of the 4. What does the dealer do?

Spread the cards out?

He tabled his hand. Big deal. I'm sure this happens accidentally all the time.

That's what I'd think, but now I hear that some believe that a dealer never touches a players hand even when tabled? I'd never heard that (and I used to deal.)

Sometimes I'll ask the player to do it, sometimes I'll do it myself. just depends on which I think will get me less flak

LOL I am not agreeing with this, I'm just saying that's what some people apparently think. Obviously the cards were touched, in this case, when the dealer mucked them without reading them. And unfortunately they were probably the winning hand.

ellen

You can't go to showdown by showing part of your hand. Dealer should ask the player to show all 4

Just be polite and ask the player to spread his cards.

...DON'T DO THAT!!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT AN OMAHA PLAYER *WANTS* YOU TO DO!!! DON'T FALL INTO HIS TRAP!!!

If you express your disapproval about the way he tables his hand, you've given him something to argue about. He's DYING for a chance to argue about something. Say anything, and he gets a free chance of accusing YOU of starting trouble!

"You don't like the way I table my hand? Are you kidding? I've been playing this game for 35 years, no dealer has ever said that? You like causing trouble, don't you?..."

Tabling cards face-up, but in a manner that makes it necessary for the dealer to do something about it, has "passive-aggressive" written all over it. Don't take the bait. Either ignore the shenanigans and spread them to make them readable, or do what this dealer did, and bury them in the muck. Either way, you don't need to say a word. Ummm... a player tabled a hand face up, but two cards were obscured. And the dealer mucked the hand? Well... if the player was intentionally being a PITA, then this wins points, but it's still wrong. The dealer would have to be very careful mucking the cards to avoid showing the hidden cards. If the dealer can bother to reach out to muck the hand, he can spread 'em first.

However, lots of Omaha players actually do try to be helpful and display their cards in a way that makes clear what they're playing. So the two cards of interest if he's claiming just a high or just a low are typically being shown more prominently than the others. So it could be the dealer thought the two best cards were being shown and saw nothing so just pulled the hand in.
