Default Buying Car and Moving / Moving Advice (Cross post from B,F&I)

I've got a job that's going to take me out of my home state (NJ) to Connecticut for 12 months. Then I go back to Jersey for at least 12 months if not 2-3 yrs or even a decade.

I'll be buying a car (in NJ) when I graduate. My father mentioned that he thinks it might be possible that CT tries to stick me with extra sales tax because I just bought the car within days before moving. Is this possible? It sounds remotely reasonable.

Second, is there a reason to change residency? Will I pay higher car insurance rates for living in Connecticut while my car/etc is registered to me being an NJ resident? More importantly, are there reasons *not* to change residency for a year?

Thanks

-Car insurance rates are usually based on where the car actually is, so that's a wash. So far as i know, ins. cos. don't care where the car is registered.
-Call the CT and NJ car tax people and ask them. They actually know the answers and will tell you.
-Is it possible to buy your car in CT if taxes are more favorable there? that might be an option
-If CT has lower taxes for your income, it might be a good idea to change residency so you don't pay higher NJ taxes.
-The best reason not to change residency is that you don't really sound like a permanent resident of CT.

None of this is legal advice because I'm not a lawyer. Most state authorities are very friendly people and will be glad to give you authoritative answers to all of these questions.

When you move to another state (depending on the state) -- they my charge you some form of Tax (personal property) or whatever -- If I was only going to live in CT for 12 months I wouldn't change my tags and hope I don't get stopped for a speeding ticket. Also if your parents still live in NJ just use their address on your drivers license and new car and not worry about it.
