Allright this is a home game STT and there are five players. The buy in was 50 bucks and everyone got 2000 in chips. It's the first hand of the game, blinds are 10/20 and I am dealt:
8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] in the BB UTG raises 20 and 4 call (Pot:200) flop comes:4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] It checks around to me and I bet 300 UTG folds, Villian calls, and everyone folds (pot:500) Turn comes: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] I bet 300, Villian raises to 600, I call (pot:1400) River comes: 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Villian pushes ALL IN, Automatic call right? (Results in white) I turn over the high strait and villian truns over K 3 of spades for the flush |

fold preflop.
You're out of position in a raised pot and it's a trash hand. |

First of all, I disagree with the "fold preflop" comment. The raiser didn't even make a normal raise. You're getting 3:1 expressed odds and enormous implied odds if you flop a hand like that str8. You just have to be able to let it go if you don't connect HARD. I wouldn't play a lot of hands like this, but if your opponent was trying to get tricky w/ AA, he gets stacked here....all for risking 20.
Back to the topic at hand, how much did you know in advance about your opponents play? If you think he is a solid player, you may not want any part of this call. Not only does a flush beat you, but a small raise with a little PP preflop and he could be sitting on a full house and you were drawing dead on the turn. As it turns out, your opponent is a lucky semi-bluffer. His play was not really very smart for tournament format- especially on the first hand (committing a big chunk of his stack on a draw when you are showing strength). Of course that's why it's a home game. |

My tourney strategy is to play tight early. You do not give the structure, and I might be a bit more aggressive if the binds increase very rapidly. Also, you do not give any reads, so I assumed typical play from a $22 online player. My play would be different against a known maniac.
That being said.... Fold pre-flop As played, I like your flop bet, your turn bet is OK. I fold to the turn raise. As played, I still fold the river even though you are down to just over 1,000 chips and are getting great pot odds. |

thanks for the comments, i know i shouldn't have played the hand but i had zero respect for the PF min raise and when i flopped huge I just couldn't get away from it. I suppose i could have folded thinking he had called a min raise with a pair of 5's

The key that you need to take away from this hand is that you have just learned more info about your opponent.
"This guy likes to semi-bluff to play a draw" - have less respect for his raises - he may just be attempting to steal the betting initiative from you. "He doesn't mind making a big play on a draw" - if you knew this last time, you reraise all-in on the turn and he either folds or pays a helluva price to chase a flush. "He is not conservative early and therefore could be on a very large range of hands" - useful for evaluating his range in future hands. Let's face it, K3 is crap suited or not. If you knew all of the above prior to that hand, you have a better chance of taking down the pot. |

Without any reads on villian i think it's a easy fold on river. Any Axs Kxs or pocket 2,4,5,7 has you beat. Being a re-buy you see a lot of people gambling so he could just have a high pocket pair but villian probably would have raised the flop if thats what he had. I say lay it down.

i'm pushing the turn, i have half my stack involved and am ahead most of the time.
if you are sure about calling the river, why didnt you push the turn? get a rebuy if you are already dead ![]() |

Preflop: fold - but I'd call with 86s or 87o here
Flop: you bet too much but if these guys are going to call huge bets then of course thats fine Turn: you bet too little... no way you can fold to a min-reraise and I'd give very serious consideration to pushes when he does raise. River: Crappy. I'd tend to call and just hope villian has a 7. If the tourny is winner take all then its a super easy call. |
