I think my mistake was to call the $7 on the turn. What should I have done with this hand starting pre-flop?

yes. now you know your mistake on the turn. Turn is a push or fold. I'd raise to 1.25 preflop.

flop is fine. I might check behind on this turn and call reasonable bet on river/bet 1/2 pot if checked to. as it stands i think this is clear baluga theorem indicating a fold on the turn.
