Recommend a martini I should try.
I'm trying to improve my martini making and want to get suggestions about what martinis (or other strong cocktails) I should try.
So far, I'm generally going for classic dry martini's with 6:1 Gin or vodka to noilly prat vermouth, served with olives for gin and lemon for vodka. Vodka is Stoli or Wybrowka, Gin is Gordons or Bombay sapphire. Alternatives are most welcome. I'm also addicted a version of a saketini I tried in new York, 4:1 vodka to sake. The Saketini made me aware that I've been very limited in my martini making, So I'm looking for martini ideas that can be made at home. I've looked at some of the cocktail sites, but the choice is so great I need to hear the voice of OOT to make recommendations. There's quite a long list of suggestions here or here (beware annoying pop ups, but good site). |

Re: Recommend a martini I should try.
Chopin Vodka, Straight up, Dry.
Edit: Olives. Bartenders that dont know better will ask if you want onions or olives. Onions make it a Gimlet, not a Martini. |

Re: Recommend a martini I should try.
When it comes to the vermouth.... dump in about a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce, swirl it around the martini glass, then dump it out. that gives you the perfect amount of vermouth.
try the olives in the vodka martini too. Make just a good ole dirty vodka martini by splashing in a bit of olive juice before the shake and strain. (i never drink em on the rocks) |

[/ QUOTE ] [nerd] I thought onions made it a gibson? [/nerd] Gimlet is possibly my favourite summmer drink, Vodka, Gomme, Roses's. Too many places wserve it with lime juice though, which doesn't work as well for me. |

I was having a drink the other day where the waitress used a vapouriser to spray the vermouth onto the chilled glass before pouring the iced and stirred gin. It was very impressive to watch her pour the gin from four foot above the glass, but I couldn't work out whether the spray was sheer affectation or very cool. I liked it though. |
