not sure if this is the right way to play this. aside from leading out instead of checking.

You really need to lead hard on this flop. With so many people in the hand, I wouldn't be worried about getting action. The push as played is fine I believe.

Def leading the flop. Someone will have some piece of it or chase some draw. Get all-in on this flop like every time.

I actually prefer a check raise, preferably all in with this many people seeing the flop. The flop probably hit someone.
