I owe $100/yr for 3 years on top of the fine for a speeding ticket?
I had never heard of the Driver Responsibility Program until I found out I was in it. They created this program in New York State about 2½ years ago. Basically, if you get six points or more on your license in an 18-month period, you get put into this program. The DMV apparently does something called a Driver Responsibility Assessment and it costs $100/year for six points and $25/year for every point on top of that.
So I get caught in a speed trap going 50 on a highway with a 25mph speed limit and I get 6 points (21-30mph over is 6). So I didn't actually get fined $145 like it said on my ticket, it's really $445 since I owe $100/yr as a penalty for getting a ticket. Has anybody ever heard of anything like this? Here's the super awesome speed trap on the 190 in Buffalo if anybody is interested. They got rid of the 75-cent toll about 8 months ago but never bothered to remove the toll barriers. I didn't slow down fast enough and must have hit the 25mph zone while I was still going 50. Unless there's rush hour traffic, I'd be willing to bet they could pull over 20% of the cars that are on this road because nobody drives 25mph for a quarter-mile on a highway. |

sounds like you didn't plead the ticket down. Probably could have avoided most of the points.

Maybe if you spent more time going the speed limit and less time drawing maps for terrorists this wouldn't have happened.

Speed-traps suck. But it also looks like you have plenty of time to slow-down. And you seem to know it pretty well so it's not like you weren't aware of it.
Obviously there's a good chance a trooper will be waiting for you. " I'd be willing to bet they could pull over 20% of the cars that are on this road because nobody drives 25mph for a quarter-mile on a highway." This makes no sense. NOBODY slows down. But they could only pull-over 20% of the drivers? Regarding the 3-year $100 tack-on. That definitely sucks. |

This is America! You are entitled to your day in court. When the court sees that you plan on tying them up with a trial, instead of meekly paying the fine like everybody else does, they will be eager to cut a deal with you. All they want is the fine, usually. They'll reduce the charge, and forget about all the other stuff (traffic school, insurance points), as long as they get their moneys quickly and efficiently. |

The same goes for Texas...I just found out myself. I had an expired driver license...by one day! I paid the ticket, then got a bill for $100 a year for the next three years! Something seems wrong here.
