Default Purchasing Artwork

So, I found a few originals that I'm really interested in at a local art gallery. I'm wondering if haggling is generally "acceptable" here. I'm assuming it is, since the price listed seems pretty arbitrary.

Assuming that the art dealer won't get all pissy when I make a lower offer, what is a good starting place? I'm looking at a few paintings in the 2500-3k range if that helps.

Any gallerist is likely happy to give you 10%, anything more you usually have to be special to them.

Is this just "standard". Again, it seems like the price is completely subjective and, though I don't know exactly how the percentages work out, I'd think the artist would be happy to sell a 3k painting for 2k...shows how unsophisticated I am.

since these places are generally run and visited by snobs, wouldn't this be insulting?

you could risk not be offered tea.

If you are dealing str8 with the artists I would try some sort of tactic where you tell them how much you love it, would look great displayed blah blah blah then act all dissapointed at the price because you only have x to spend. That may work.

I have gotten higher than 10% discount when I bought several works of the same artist.
