OOT Pole Theater #2, When were you first taught to type
So Evan is engaged in conversation with a cat farmer/professional blogger/amature economist and one of her replies points out to him that he's being gauche and using 2 spaces after a period where one will suffice.
Evan responds: "When I was in kindergarten they taught us to type on typewriters and presumably told me to use two spaces." And upon seeing this I lol and think "lol, typing, kindergarten". But it turns out that the dude is serious and I'm like wtf I wasn't taught that [censored] until middle school. (that I can recall, I know I had computer clases and stuff before then, but I don't remember taking a touch typing class until at least 6th grade). Then again, I'm old and Evan is young (and short), and it makes sense that they'd start kids earlier these days. So OOT, when were you first taught to type? |

Re: OOT Pole Theater #2, When were you first taught to type
Just to clarify, my kinergarten classroom had 2 (maybe 3) typewriters in it that we would each get to use for a little bit of time. I don't remember the specifics, but I don't think I was all that proficient at the time.
For those that are shocked I used a typewriter...I don't know. I will tell you that I was in kindergarten in 1990 and I lived in a pretty wealthy area/school district. I remember using computers in maybe 3rd or 4th grade. So this must have been before more people had them I'd think. 1990 was very early for PC's. |

I'm old and never learned to type. I could have taken it in high school but didn't. I've gotten pretty fast with just two fingers though.

How can you have a poll with kindergarten and middle school but not elementary school?

You have secret convos with E. La Monstre? Or is this another "Dids reveals secrets from the IRC Sun Chamber" thread?
I was never taught to type in public school. |

Re: OOT Pole Theater #2, When were you first taught to type
Definitely in middle school. Most kids actually liked typing class in 6th grade, because we used a program called Mavis Beacon, which was pretty much a game that taught the proper way to type.
things I learned then.. 2 spaces after period (includes ? and !) and colon 1 after comma and semi colon 5 spaces equal indent things I should have learned but didn't I never learned to use the right shift key. I always use the left one. Even if I have to capitalize a key like 'z', I'll use my left pinky for the shift and my left middle finger for z. I also used my right hand for 'b'. I think we were supposed to use the left hand. It was no problem until I had one of those ergonomic keyboards that split the letters in two for each hand and slightly tilted. The 'b' key was on the left side and I have learn that new. Never perfected numbers (not the keypad) or punctuation until I had a job. |
