I think there was a music video by a color-me-bad type group with Justin Timberlake in it that came out around christmas time. I'm pretty sure that video had a good idea for presents to gfs.

I'm lacking the desire to be sarcastic (although the **** in a box thing is moderately amusing). Get her some cheap azz grocery store flowers, a card with plenty of room to write in it how in love with her you are and how lucky you are etc. etc. (and probably explaining the lack of $$$, hence the cheap gift), and then with the rest of the $$$ get candles & rose petals & food & prepare her a romantic meal. Done & done.
