Default RGP Thread about Imus impact on Obama\'s prospects

I'm not sure whether this belongs here on OOT or in Politics. Anyway, there is a very interesting thread on RGP about a possible backlash that the Imus affair can have on the Obama campaign. (source of the quoted text below: RGP Imus/Obama Thread)

"Is it possible that in an effort to avenge their fallen voice that the
fans of Imus would express their vengefull feelings by making it as
difficult as possible for Barak Obama to win?

Now I don't know how many loyal supporters and listeners Imus had but
if they are of a very big number, would there be enough of them to
derail Obama from having any chance whatsoever of ever becoming the
first black President or Vice-President?

This is just obviously hypothetical given that Imus may not have had
that many loyal supporters to begin with. And if he did have a lot of
supporters, they would probably stay very silent out of fear of being
called racists.

For the record, I'm glad Imus was taken off the air. What he said was
absolutely classless."

It will be a non-event. He didn't have that many listeners. However Obama will be dead meat if he continues to do things that put him in the same league as Sharpton and Jackson.

And what did Obama do to put himself in the same league as Sharpton and Jackson?

Calling for Imus to be fired. I don't think that Clinton or Edwards did it. It was a somewhat extreme position. A more moderate position would be apology, suspension and some type of positive action by Imus.

Imus has a history of making racist remarks, this was not a one time [censored] up. I find it hard to believe a potential Obama voter would be turned off by him calling for the firing of a racist sports commentator.

I don't think Imus should have been fired, but won't shed a tear because he was. Regardless, saying Obama is in the same league as Sharpton and Jackson just because he said Imus should be fired is, for lack of a better word, ridiculous.

So you know that Imus has made racist remarks but you think he is a sports commentator? Interesting.

In the primaries perhaps he doesn't have to worry. In the general election, I don't think we'll see him standing side-by side with Sharpton or Jackson. Perhaps you don't remember Bill Clinton distancing himself from them in 92.

While Imus and his crew stepped over the line many times over the years he is a complex figure with good and bad sides. I doubt that a poll of the American people would show a majority in favor of him losing his job.

I don't think you read me correctly. Just saying on this issue he took the position (I believe it was a somewhat extreme position) that agreed with Sharpton's position. If he continues to appear aligned with Sharpton it will not be good for him.
