Default MLB top 40 trade value, 2007

dave cameron, on the best baseball blog going (even if its a mariners blog), posted his top 40 players in terms of trade value (similar to the bill simmons style for nba that he runs each year)

his list:

Rank Name Position Team
1 Felix Hernandez RHP Seattle
2 Albert Pujols 1B St. Louis
3 Miguel Cabrera 3B Florida
4 Jose Reyes SS New York Mets
5 Joe Mauer C Minnesota Twins
6 Grady Sizemore CF Cleveland
7 Johan Santana LHP Minnesota
8 Brian McCann C Atlanta
9 Delmon Young RF Tampa Bay
10 David Wright 3B New York Mets
11 Scott Kazmir LHP Tampa Bay
12 Chase Utley 2B Philadelphia
13 Brandon Webb RHP Arizona
14 Ryan Howard 1B Philadelphia
15 Ben Sheets RHP Milwaukee
16 Jeremy Bonderman RHP Detroit
17 Travis Hafner DH Cleveland
18 Alex Gordon 3B Kansas City
19 John Lackey RHP Anaheim
20 Daisuke Matsuzaka RHP Boston
21 Howie Kendrick 2B Anaheim
22 Carl Crawford LF Tampa Bay
23 Philip Hughes RHP New York Yankees
24 Hanley Ramirez SS Florida
25 Roy Halladay RHP Toronto
26 Matt Cain RHP San Francisco
27 Nick Markakis RF Baltimore
28 Brett Myers RHP Philadelphia
29 Ryan Zimmerman 3B Washington
30 Justin Verlander RHP Detroit
31 Prince Fielder 1B Milwaukee
32 Jake Peavy RHP San Diego
33 Rickie Weeks 2B Milwaukee
34 Jeff Francoeur RF Atlanta
35 Cole Hamels LHP Philadelphia
36 Robinson Cano 2B New York Yankees
37 Jason Bay LF Pittsburgh
38 Lance Berkman 1B Houston
39 Erik Bedard LHP Baltimore
40 Dan Haren RHP Oakland

he does some explaining at http://ussmariner.com/

my initial reaction was that he's awfully high on phillip hughes right now, and cano/francouer don't even belong on the list.

thoughts?

I wouldn't trade McCann for Reyes, and I don't think the Mets would trade Wright for McCann.

Francoeur SHOULD be on the list, but he hasn't been progressing like I thought he would. Hopefully not having the WBC and more time with TP will help that.

My initial reaction is that St Louis would never trade Pujols for King Felix, but the Mariners might do the deal.

I think he gets most of the players right. Cano and Francoeur may or may not belong. Jeff could play center on any normal team, so that would boost his value. At the very laest, they're low.

Hmmm... I think Liriano belongs.

but still, hernandez is 20 years old, makes 400k, and is under control through 2011, and is probably one of the 5 best pitchers (3 best?) in baseball. i'm not so sure the mariners would trade him for pujols right now.

2 great starts doesn't make you one of the best starters in mlb

you're right. problem is, hernandez has almost 300 career innings. you don't happen to end up in the majors by accident at age 19

he's not one of the three best pitchers in baseball at this point in his career. he's young and under control til 2011 which makes him very very very valuable. he played a full season last year, and granted he was young, but wasn't even as valuable as say, Scot Shields. Obviously he's been dominant so far this year, but it's 2 starts, and his peripherals from even last night's 'unhittable' start aren't anything to write home about. Give him some time before you go annointing him - there are still a dozen(more?) players I'd rather have than King Felix even considering the players current contracts.
