Default HU vs. river overbet

Villain just came and sat with me at an empty table. This might have been like the 3rd hand. He is completely unknown.

basically we're worried about 7h8h, Kh8h, mayyybe Kh7h but seems like that would raise the turn (though less likely than K7o or something). that's not many hands so i like your call.

vs. a complete unknown maybe I tend to not give them enough credit on earlier streets, but my first impression is that he has 78 or Q8. If he's going to push the river on a bluff either he's very surprisingly bluff calling both the flop and turn, or he's got a busted flush draw, in which case I'd expect a push on the turn rather than the river.

Is a turn check with the intention of calling most river bets or value betting if checked to here horrible, and if so, why? Would you usually go for a turn bet over a turn check?
