Starting hand charts are a much bigger crutch at NL than at Limit. Table dynamics and your opponents' tendencies have a much bigger influence on which cards you play. Also, the goal at NL is not to win hands but to extract value from your opponents. This leads to the preference of some weaker hands over some stronger ones. For example 87o is 47% in the above chart, while K4o is 57%. Yet in most situations you would much prefer to raise or even call a raise with 87o over K4o.

Bare in mind that is a HU chart, I only use it as a rough guidance for ring.
HU I'd rather have K4 than 78 |

Gull - that chart makes zero sense for NL 6-max
Here's a rough guide to get you started. These are all opening guidelines. Raising limpers is slightly different. UTG/UTG+1 - KJs+, KQo+, AJo+, 22+ KJs and AJo are by far the most marginal hands, and debatable folds. Start folding small pairs 22-55 if your getting 3bet light often. Middle Positions - Any broadway/any pair/89s+ Late position - Any broadway/any pair/45s+ In particular you can get somewhat retarded open button. If you want to add in a marginal hand like 97s or whatever, test it out from button first to get a feel for what situations these hands are good to play in. Blinds - pretty tricky. Start by only playing AK/any pair versus any open. AQo+/KQs/any pair versus late opens. You can start to open up after you get a feel but it takes a while to get reasonably good on the blinds (I'm still working on it). I found it difficult to have a good calling strategy on blinds heads up versus a decent TAG. Limpers it depends on the number of limpers, there stats. Seriously there is some good stuff in the FAQ about this, and you could also use the search function. This question has been asked before. |
