stumped
ok, i need help.
I came home the other day to my computer turned off, i never turn my computer off so i immediately get nervous. i go to turn it back on and nothing. i unplug everything, pull all but the video card and still no fire. ok, bad power supply. Put new power supply in, plug in only the necessities. The computer fires, fans go, video card fan works (with and without power plugged into it), USB's are not powering as optical mouse never lights up. getting a no signal from cable on my monitor. Power is definitely getting to the HD as it is spinning. Bought a new video card today and still no connection to monitor. Found an ancient regular pci video card, no video. monitor tests fine when plugged in to laptop so the cord is fine also. The 20+4 pin connector is firmly in. The additional 4 pin connector is in. any ideas? i'm stuck on fried motherboard or fried video card socket. I would hate to order a new mobo and finally figure out something else. any ideas? |

Re: stumped
What I would do is test all your parts one by one - on another computer and see if you can find out what the prolem is - could be cpu or Hd - or motherboard even ram - loose wires? sounds like your motherboard to me - but thats a guess - GL

Re: stumped
Yeah, it's not a pretty picture when that power supply goes and you come home to everything off. Last time my power supply went (it started smoking), it took my hard drive, mother board, cd burners (including a brand new dvd-rw) with it. good news is, I got rid of some e-mails and files I didn't need to keep.
It sounds like a motherboard to me. Do you get any beeps? That can help out - find the manual, or info online, and see what the beeps mean. |

Re: stumped
Thanks for the input guy, i finally resolved it earlier today. Brought it by my buddies house to begin testing each piece in a different computer. pulled the motherboard battery to reset the bios, pulled the ram to see if it was bad, when my buddy jiggles the cpu heatsink. it was a touch loose, fixed that and everything works again. i still think the power supply was bad, but all is fine now. thanks again.
