I got into a situation a few weeks ago where this guy pushed me AI with an obvious straight or flush. I knew I was drawing dead, but it was only another $75 into a pot of like $375. So as I was figuring out my move and what I had left, I had my chips into 3 piles. The dealer says "your chips are past your cards, that's a call." I realized I had made a mistake while thinking, and that 1 of my 3 piles was past my cards. The other 2 piles were halfway across, the top edge of the cards were parallel to the center of my chips. They quickly called the floor over, and they ruled it a call. I realized it was my mistake and didn't complain, but made the call.
The only two questions I was left with were this: 1) If it wasn't for that forward pile of chips, would it have been a call? If the the center of your chips are lined up with the top line of your cards, is that considered past the line? Or does the whole thing have to be past the cards? 2) If that wasn't the case and I only definitively had one stack past my cards, was I committed to calling the AI when the dealer said I had chips past my cards? Or could I have just folded and left the 1 stack that was past my cards into the pot, and saved the rest of my chips? |

Sounds awfully nitty to me. In my experience, most 'good' dealers will ask you if you're calling.

If that's the betting rule in said casino, then that's the rule and the floor upheld it. The dealer is not allowed to ask you if you call, raise, or fold for that matter. If they see chips come into the betting area, then they will do what they are supposed to do. |

Yeah, this varies from room to room. If you're going to play with chips in front of your cards while thinking, best to ask the floor the room's policy beforehand.

This obviously is the rule in this casino. That is a horrible rule. As a general rule any rule that forces a player to make an action other than his clear intent is a bad rule.

Another semi-related question for everyone:
I also played up at the Trop for a little bit, and there they have a betting line instead. I only got to play a little bit there so didn't get to figure out all the ins and outs of it. If I knock chips over to bet, like take a stack of 5 and let it slide out so it's visible, and only 4 of them cross the bet line, is the bet 4 chips or 5? |

Depends on the room.
However, one's verbal declaration always trumps everything. That's part of protecting your hand. |
