Starship Troopers
I just caught this movie last night and I have to ask - it's a joke, right? I mean, I couldn't help but thinking "I must be getting levelled here". At first I thought it was just a cheesy action flick, but some of the dialogue really put it over the top:
"I expect the best and I give the best. Here's the beer. Here's the entertainment. Now have fun. That's an order." "You're some sort of big, fat, smart-bug, aren't you?" Private Sugar Watkins: Gimme the nuke Johnny Rico: You trying to be a hero, Watkins? Private Sugar Watkins: Just trying to kill some bugs, sir. Zander: My God. How could this happen? Carmen: We thought we were smarter than the Bugs. I have to believe that it's a satire on the genre, and not to be taken seriously. Right? |

Re: Starship Troopers
At least you got it. Yes it's satire. The director Paul Verhoeven has stated so in many interviews.

Re: Starship Troopers
It's not so much a satire on the action genre but an interesting look at the military in general. The book does a much better job at getting it's point across (obviously, because it's a full length book and not a 2 hour movie.) I think the movie does a good job at getting across the Spartan attitude of the Mobile Infantry.
So to answer your question: No, not to be taken seriously, but that doesn't mean it's a complete joke either. ps. Denise Richards |

It's not so much a satire on the action genre but an interesting look at the military in general. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure you understand what satire means. The movie is a satire of fascist politics. From Wiki[ QUOTE ] the purpose of satire is not primarily humour but criticism of an event, an individual or a group in a clever manner. [/ QUOTE ] The book 1984 is a satire, but it's not funny or has jokes. |

Re: Starship Troopers
Denise Richards was freakishly beautiful in that flick.
In a way this flick was like Andy Hardy Goes to Space War. I think it was underrated as satire, but in a way it delivered less bitingly than it could have because the director was still trying to stay somewhat within the confines of the book's main story, which perhaps wouldn't allow him to drive his points home much more fiercely than he did. I think Verhoeven needed a touch of John Waters style "Hairspray" hallucinatory reality in this flick to really pull off the satire fully, or a Colonel Bat Guano or two. |

Re: Starship Troopers
When it first came out, I really liked it. I thought that it was funny and just entertaining (plus it had Denise Richards and that other lady Desi who got naked in the shower).
Anyways, I watched it again recently and it wasn't as cool. Just didn't live up to what I remember of it from before |

Re: Starship Troopers
Movie was good, book was MUCH better. I like Heinlein and am hoping they find a way to adapt Stranger in a Strange Land. Now THAT would be an awesome movie with an excellent message. You Grok me?
