Default The World Series of Gambling Octathalon

Hey All,

Last year I posted about what I call The World Series of Gambling Octathalon .

You can search for the post, but here it is in a nutshell:

$100 Buy-In.
16 Entrants (College buddies hailing from 6 states)
8 Events
11AM Start

Event 1 Mini-Golf
Event 2 Bowling
Event 3 Off Track Horse Wagering
Event 4 Bocce Ball
Event 5 Three Cup Mana-a-Mana Beer Pong (single elimination)
Event 6 NL Poker Tourney
Event 7 Darts (301)
Event 8 Rocks Paper Scissors (Best of 7 with double elimination)

Top two in each event win $50-$25 respectively
Overall Top 4 get paid as well.

There is also a mandatory "side bet buy in" of $25 in which I go to the back and get 100's of $1 bills that every MUST use for side bets along the way.

$10 of each entry goes towards food/kegs.

Anyways, that is the short version of the rules.

There is a 'Constitution' (with about 15 Appendices) that explains it all in much greater detail.

I promised to post it last yeat but totally forgot.

I am ready to do so now, but do not know how....It is a MS WORD doc. Can I email it to someone and they host/post it?

Thanks for the help...

Just sent the email (2pm EST)
Enjoy, all...any questions are encouraged.

One thing to note:

we took a LOT of time in the selection process of the events.

Each event really needed to be an event that ANYONE could potentially win. We wanted as little skill advantage as possible.

While some of these events may give someone an edge, they all allow just about anyone to step up and win.

For example I am terrible at darts, but won. Catch a few lucky shots and you can win.

Many people in the past suggested all kinds of events....but many of them all allwed for one person to be MUCH better than another...such as *real golf* and *playstation games* (many dont even own a playstation...

If you decide do do a WSOGO, be sure to consider this issue.

I think that our constiitution covers just about everything....

Feedback/questions encouraged...

Bowling definitely doesn't fit your 'little skill advantage' category.

The rest look good, though.

If you're playing outdoors with Bocce Ball, you may also want to try to fit in Bean-Bag Toss or Horseshoes.

Hey Z,

The idea is not to have *no* skill advantage so much as to have events in which just about anyone can compete.

Even if you havent bowled in years you can still heave it right down the middle.

I guess if you knw that one of your friends is an expert you can replace the event.

I agree with you on horseshoes....but usually the 'host' doesnt want their lawn torn up. Else, its a great addition.

As far as adding more events...be careful....

In the first year we did the WSOG it was a dodecathalon (12-events)

We ended up having to cancel 3 events and call it a night at 5:30 AM as too many competitors were passed out after drinking since 11AM (19 hours)

The 'octathalon' ended around 1am.

Additionally, we are eliminating poker this year because it took about 2.5-3 hours.

And we really wanted to have a little more time to just 'hang-out' since we only get to see each other (in some cases) once a year.

Another note is this....when you are creating the rules/timelines for each event, try to keep the overall WSOGO in mind.

That is, while 501 may be better for darts, 301 is shorter
While 20 minute levels may make a better poker tourney....10 min. make a more oiled WSOGO
While people may want to bowl 3 games, 2 may be better for the WSOGO etc...etc...etc...

Bowling and darts have a big skill advantage. I did this for a bachelor party once, but i made everything doubles. Drew for partners the first round and then every round after first got paired with last place and so on.

I think getting hold of an illegal set of lawn darts (jarts) is a must and wouldn't destroy the lawn.
