Default First time B&M, way different experience(1/2)

I played 1/2 last night at Harrahs which would be my first time playing No Limit in a casino. I have played in a home game for the past two years with a good mix of good players and really horrible players.

In general, the betting was completely different than what I was used to.

There was a lot of betting the pot on the flop with 1-3 opponents no matter what came. It was way different than my home game where bets on the flop usually range from 1/2 to 3/4 of the pot. I'm still learning the game but isn't betting the pot on the flop incredibly exploitable unless the better has some specific reads(these guys did not have any good reads)? It seems to me like I would stop playing suited connectors but play a lot of pocket pairs and big suited cards and min raise bluff on rag boards. Are these guys playing scared poker or is betting the pot a lot of times sound poker?

Betting the pot is perfectly fine.

I was hoping to get a more detailed answer than this. Why is betting the pot preferable? Wouldn't smaller bets get more action from worse hands and keep the pot small(assuming these guys didn't have monsters every hand) and be less susceptable to a bluff. It seems to me if you are going to c-bet the pot on the flop every time you c-bet you are just leaving money out there to be taken by anyone with the stones to pick you off.

I never said there was anything wrong with betting the pot but there seemed to be a lot of it with just one pair or as a c-bet.

EDIT: BTW, most guys were doing this with medium stacks.

Pot betting flop isn't a bad play all the time. However, if a player does it over and over then they will eventually get picked off.

B&M 1/2NL is pretty wild and many of the players are very bad. So don't be surprised to see things that make no sense to you.

Farf -

People bet pot all the time. It's not that unusual. I do it a lot. When I have air, I have higher FE with a stiff bet. When I have a big hand, it builds the pot that much more quickly and sets up bigger turn/river bets.

If you only bet pot with monsters, bet 3/4 with marginal made hands, and bet 1/2 pot with draws - people will catch on to your bet sizing.
