Default Bet/Folding My Way to Poverty

Game is 5 handed because its late. $15-$30 Bellagio

Villian is in the BB. He is an older guy who seems like a Bellagio regular b/c everybody knows him, but he plays worse than most of the regulars. About half the time he is uber agressive on the flop and turn and then shows an under pair or something like that. For example I once 3 bet A10s on a 9s 7s 2x board and he 4 bet me with 88. So either he has a good read on me or he is a little off. The other half of the time he seems out of it and calls off all his chips. He is down about 2 racks.

1 fold, UTG+1 raises (Solid player with a wide opening range), I 3 bet A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], SB folds, BB and UTG+1 both call.

BB calling 2 cold confused me. I hadn;t been 3 betting light and he had 4 bet before a few times with medium pocket pairs. So his call made me think he had something Like AJ or AQ.

Flop 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Checked to me. I bet. Both call.

Turn 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Checked to me, I bet. Villian raises. UTG+1 folds. I call.

River: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Villian bets, I raise, Villain 3-bets, I fold . . .

In how many places do you hate this hand?

I have to go back to SH mentality.

*brain shift*

ok...

I guess I don't hate the 3bet preflop. If you're saying he could do this with 22-AA, all kinds of broadway, all kinds of suited connectors, then I guess why not try and isolate against him.

As played I like the flop bet. gutshot, backdoor flush, one over, and the aggression is all yours. Good semi bluff.

Now the turn I don't like. If both check to you, and you've now picked up the flush draw and straight draw, you've got to take the free card imho. The range of hands these guys have is going to include a pair, a straight draw, a made flush, a pair with a high diamond etc...

As played when you got check raised, I think the call is automatic given the draw to the nuts.

The river raise: before you make that raise, I think you need to be ready to fold to a reraise. Ask yourself what hand is calling your raise ? No weaker hand is calling. You're either seeing another straight, or a flush. So your line should probably be

call, or raise/fold.

in my humble opinion.

I think pre-flop was deinfitely correct. I might not be ahead, but my image had enough respect that I could play him off better hands post-flop.

why do you hate pre-flop? You don't think A9 beat a wide variety of his raising range?

I certainly prefer raising A9 in a SH game then calling. I'd fold or raise.

Hate pre-flop & turn.Raising a solid up-front raiser with A9 won't get it.

you're probably just a hair ahead of his range hot/cold equity wise but your implied odds aren't great and you guys aren't the only ones at the table. there's a guy yet to act that likes to 4 bomb med pocket pairs. I wait for a better spot.

I have position, a good image. If he misses with A10, AJ, KJ, etc., he is done with this hand given the strength of my 3-bet.
