Default Micros and Rake

How does the rake paid by players at the micro limit tables compare to the higher stakes tables?

I have played about 30,000 hands of 10c/20c at Stars and have paid ~$200 in rake while winning ~$170 or 3 bb/100, and am amazed to have paid so much in rake.

Thanks guys.

Rake becomes far less substantial the higher you go since the poker sites cap the rake (normally at $3). So at .1/.2 you're always paying 5% of each pot as rake. You continue to pay 5% of each pot until you reach a level where your average pot is >$60. At this point you've capped the rake and all limits above this allow you to pay a smaller % in rake.

Unfortunately, there isn't much of an improvement in rake until you hit the $10/$20 games, as even the $5/$10 games see the majority of pots under $60, thus incurring full 5% rake.

Don't assume that all sites are 5%. I believe FT is around 10%(at micros)from a recent post and, IIRC, pokerroom was a sliding scale that was around 8% when the rake first kicked in and then dropped to 5% as it went up. Check the sites' rake pages. It may not be easy to find, but all sites list their rake somewhere

But in general rake becomes less of an issue as you go up. Then there's always WPEX.

For NL Hold'em, the worst limit rakewise is 50NL.

At 25NL and below, on a limped flop, the potsize is often under $1 and that charges no rake on most sites. Also, the pot is often something between $1.50-$1.95 where you only pay $0.05 rake. Overall, you pay around 3.5-4% rake on average there.

In 50NL, every flop is raked and pots rarely get above $60. On average the rake is around 4.5%.

At 100NL, the rake starts dropping percentagewise because of the $3 cap. Around 3-3.5%.

Also, the higher the limit, the less flops you see (more aggression, so more often the hand ends preflop) and since most sites have a 'no flop, no drop' policy, the average rake is less percentagewise.

At 1000NL and above the rake is just 0.5% of the pot.

For Limit Hold'em, at some sites, the rake at micro limit is devastating. When the BBJ at Party was really high, I played a few 0.50/1 limit tables. On a $5 pot, the rake was 0.5+0.5 which is 20%! So while I invested $2.50, my net profit was only $1.50.

So in short:
- at micro limit players have to beat the rake to win
- at high limits players have to beat the players to win

Did I hear someone yell "rape?"

Even with RB, that's still more than other sites.
