Default CPA referral?

Hello,

I've posted about this a couple of times but never received a good answer. I would like to speak to a CPA who is at least somewhat knowledgable about taxes in relation to gambling income. Could anyone recommend someone that they've talked to? NY area would be best...

Thanks,
Peter

ok got back from the place. They didn't seem to know anything specific to gambling taxes, specifically for professional gamblers

Russ Fox is very knowledgeable because he's an EA, not a CPA. EAs (Enrolled Agents) are federally licensed tax specialists. I'm not certain, but I don't think CPAs are even required to have any knowledge of tax preparation to get/keep their licenses.

You can go here to find an EA.

The tax portion of the CPA exam is fairly grueling and involved. In addition to the CPA exam, most CPAs have taken at least 2-3 tax courses.

That being said, the tax expertise for many CPAs stops right there and they do not expand their tax knowledge further after the exam. While there are continuing ed requirements for CPAs, there is not a requirement that CPAs take continuing ed courses in taxes.

Many CPAs specialize in tax, and do an excellent job. However, many CPAs are in audit, general accounting, or consulting. And CPAs (as DDY noted) do not have to continue with tax education once they get their license (though many do). And there are very few tax professionals of any type in the U.S. who specialize in gambling.

Enrolled Agents only do tax work, and all of our continuing education is in tax. Unfortunately, EAs have done a lousy job of publicizing our profession.

I am in Irvine, California for the poster who asked.
