Default Handling Bad Beats

I have been playing online for 1 year & I am having a real problem handling the bad beats.I am playing fine & 1 suckout will throw me into a tailspin. Any advice on how to handle this.It is so frustrating to build a pot & watch it slip away, time &time again.Maybe I need some anger management??

Do you understand that bad beats result from your opponents getting lucky after making bad, sometimes really bad, decisions? Bad beats are simply an artifact of playing in good games and regularly getting the best of it.

When a guy calls to the river with bottom pair do you get irate as you scoop the pot? Yet, when that same guy hits his 5-outer to beat you, which he will only do a small percentage of the time, you blow your stack. It makes no sense. Accept that bad beats are the small price you pay to get the best of it over and over again.

Think of yourself as a casino, and all the players are your customers.

Pretend you are running a blackjack table and are dealt 20. A player doubles down on 13 and hits an 8.

Do you go nuts, crazy, yell at him for being an idiot?

Or do you gleefully deal out another hand knowing that this poor fool will be broke soon?

There is no such thing as a bad beat. You are favored by a number in a hand. Even if you are a 95% favorite, 5 times out of 100 you are going to lose. Those 5 aren't 'bad beats', just absolute mathmatics at work.

Tell yourself that if you made the right decision, in the long run that situation will be favorable to you. Poker is a long-term game.

My anger management book disagrees with the second part of your statement. Reacting with violence (even simulated) just makes you better at being angry. Tends to help fuel the problem instead of helping you deal with it.

P.S. Not in anger management because of poker. Although I must admit that sometimes it can add some fuel to the fire.

Just remember... you are doing something right when you suffer bad beats rather than dish them out...
