Illinois +2.5 v Va Tech
Va Tech doesn't play as fast as people think. There strength is scoring from perimeter players. That plays right into the Illini strength, defense stopping perimeter stars. According to the stats, the comparable games for Illinois are MSU and Indiana: where the Illini went 3-2 SU, 1-0 on nuetral court. V Tech lost to SIU 69-64 on a nuetral court earlier this year and SIU is basically Illinois Jr as they run almost the exact same schemes with less talented players. V Tech lost 3 of 4 down the stretch, while the Illini played their best bball at 8-3 down the stretch. Over that time, Illinois soundly handled all the lesser teams and decent teams at home while having real tough, within one score under 30 seconds left losses at Indiana and at Iowa. It should also be noted that Illinois and Weber are used to this stage. Illinois has won 7 straight first round games. Weber has been good in the NCAA including his SIU sweet16 with his success at Illinois. V Tech hasn't played a NCAA game in 11 years or so. The way that V Tech beats Illinois is if Illinois cannot protect the ball and make too many turnovers. Expect an ugly game, but for Illinois to win close at the end. |

I would like somebody that has seen Holy Cross help me on this one but Holy Cross +7.5 looks good.
The over/under is around 109 and both teams like to play in the 40s and 50s so it seems like it should be a close game. Holy Cross center is 6-10 and SIU biggest deficiencies are that their front line is undersized, prone to foul trouble and not deep. |

6-1 on posted NCAA 1st round yesterday (including an added 2nd half). Let's keep it up.
I have from yesterday. USC -1.5 Purdue +2.5 Illini/VT over 117.5 Creighton +1.5 Adding Illinois +3 - glad I waited. LBSU/UT over 169.5 - big line, bigger score Albany +8.5 (going against UVa's overseeding) Nova -1.5 As stated previously, top 3 pix are Creighton Illinois Over Purdue |

I admit my avatar suggests that there might be a little bias involved, but I really like Georgia Tech tomorrow. Sagarin says they should be favored by 5.5 on a neutral court, but the line's only at 2. KenPom backs up the Sagarin numbers, putting GT at #14 (vs. #13 Sagarin) and putting UNLV at #51 (vs. #51 Sagarin).
Furthermore, Georgia Tech has improved greatly over the course of the season which is something that's not reflected in the Sagarin ratings. They finished 7-3 over their last 10 games including wins over North Carolina and Boston College and a win at Florida State. This isn't just random chance either; it's the result of their two stars and two more major contributors being freshmen who weren't ready to shine in November. Finally, the venue favors Georgia Tech as even though Chicago's a long way from both schools, the start time of 12:25 EST favors the the Atlanta-based team (where it would be 12:25) vs. the Las Vegas-based team (where it would be 9:25 AM). Even though I'm a Georgia Tech fan, I'm still able to look at them with an unbiased eye and only bet them when I really like the line. The last wager I placed on the Jackets was the game where they upset Carolina. Here, I think the line's off significantly, as I like the Jackets by 9. I'm putting 5 units on this tomorrow, making it my biggest play of the first round. |
